The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Navaixes cuts the field in half: the elm in the white half and the tower in the blue half. The two trees that define the locality, one on each ground.

How it came about

Navaixes is a municipality of the Alt Palància, in the province of Valencia. Its coat of arms is one of the oldest in the País Valencià: it was restored by Decree 562/1961, of 6 April, published in BOE number 86. The flag came thirty-seven years later, by Resolution of 17 June 1998, of the conseller de Presidència, published in DOGV number 3,304.

The coat of arms bears an elm, the tree that gives the place its name —navalixes, in Valencian, literally means “place of the elm”— and a tower, alluding to the castle. The flag carries both figures on a divided field.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 1998 and there are no documented later modifications. The coat of arms, on the other hand, comes from a restoration of 1961.

What it means

  • White upper half

the argent of the coat of arms.

  • Green elm

the tree that gives the town its name.

  • Blue lower half

the azure of the coat of arms.

  • White tower

    the castle of Navaixes.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms restored in 1961

Navaixes is one of the few municipalities with a coat of arms restored by a decree of 1961, when the Generalitat did not yet exist and it was the national government authorities who approved the arms. The flag is from 1998, almost forty years later. It is the oldest case in this group.

  2. The name of the town is its flag

Navaixes means, in Valencian, place of the elm. The flag puts the elm in the upper half. It is a canting element, like the cypress of Cirat or the flower of Matet.

  3. Two figures, two halves

Each half of the field bears a single figure: the elm above, the tower below. It is a flag that reads as two superimposed coats of arms, instead of one coat of arms with two elements.
