The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Pina preserves three centuries of history in a field: the royal bars of the Crown of Aragon, an Iberian tower in ruins and a pine tree. It is one of the most heraldic flags of the Alt Palància.

How it came about

Pina is a municipality of the Alt Palància. Its coat of arms was restored by Resolution of 15 May 2007, of the conseller de Justícia, Interior i Administracions Públiques, published in DOCV number 5,525. The flag came three years later, by Resolution of 4 May 2010, of the conseller de Solidaritat i Ciutadania, published in DOCV number 6,266.

The traditional coat of arms of Pina represents the Iberian tower of El Prospinal, a vestige preserved in ruins, and a pine tree as a play on the place name. The royal arms —the four pales— recall the times when Pina belonged to the Crown of Aragon.

How it has changed

It has never changed since 2010. The coat of arms, on the other hand, was restored in 2007, though the motif goes back much further.

What it means

  • Red

    the ground of the field.

  • Four pales of gules

the arms of the Crown of Aragon, on a small shield.

  • Tower of three battlements

the Iberian tower of El Prospinal, in ruins today.

  • Pine tree

the tree that gives the town its name.

Fun facts

  1. The coat of arms has been seen since 1876

In the National Historical Archive two seals of Pina from 1876 are preserved, one from the Mayor’s office and one from the Town Council, with a coat of arms almost identical to the current one: the same pointed oval and the same four bars, but without the small shield. The current flag comes from a drawing that was already a hundred and thirty years old.

  2. An Iberian tower, not a castle

The tower on the coat of arms is not a medieval castle: it is the Iberian tower of El Prospinal, a pre-Roman vestige still preserved in ruins in the municipality. Pina puts a Bronze Age tower on its flag.

  3. The pine tree and the tower, the two names

Pina means pine tree, and it says so with a drawn tree. The Iberian tower is not an ornament: it is the other element that identifies the town, the one you can still visit. The flag tells the two things Pina is known by.
