The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Ponte de Lima has four quarters, yellow and purple, and the arms of the town in the centre. The arms show its four-arched bridge over the Lima river, with a cross and two towers. Ponte de Lima, in the Alto Minho, is often called the oldest town in Portugal.

How it came about

Flag and coat of arms were approved on 25 June 1938, according to Flags of the World. They followed the rule of the time: towns used quarters and cities eight triangles. The town is much older: it received its fueros on 4 March 1125, from Queen Teresa and her son Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.

How it has changed

No earlier versions of the flag or the coat of arms are known. The district capital, Viana do Castelo, also uses four quarters, though black and yellow.

What it means

  • Yellow and purple in quarters

    the ground of the towns.

  • Golden four-arched bridge

the Roman and medieval bridge over the Lima, which gives the town its name. Below, white and blue waves.

  • Golden cross between two towers

    over the bridge.

  • Mural crown of four towers

the band says “VILA DE PONTE DE LIMA”.

Fun facts

  1. The oldest town in Portugal

It is called that because of its fueros of 1125, granted by Queen Teresa and her son.

  2. The river of forgetting

According to a legend, the Roman soldiers did not want to cross the river because they believed it erased memory. The commander crossed it and called them one by one by name.
