The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

Pensacola, in the west of Florida, calls itself ‘the city of five flags’. This image brings them all together: France’s, Castile’s, the United States’, the British one and that of the Confederate States.

How it came about

Pensacola has changed hands several times: it was Spanish, French, British, Confederate during the civil war and American. That is why the city displays five flags at once on its public buildings, one for each government.

The Flags of the World portal, which collects flags from all over the world, knows of no official flag of the city. The image on this page is a composition with those five flags.

How it has changed

The composition has not changed, but the way of displaying the five flags has. In 2000 the city replaced the Confederate battle flag with the first national flag of the Confederacy, more faithful to history, and later withdrew it and put up the flag of Florida in its place.

What it means

  • Fleurs-de-lis

    France.

  • Castles and lions

Spain, with the arms of Castile and León.

  • Stripes and stars

    the United States.

  • British flag

    the United Kingdom.

  • First Confederate flag

    the Confederate States.

Fun facts

  1. A more accurate Confederate flag

In 2000 the city replaced the Confederate battle flag with the first flag of the Confederacy, because the battle flag was not used until after the Confederate troops left Pensacola in 1862.

  2. Five segments in the logo

The city’s new logo has five parts, in tribute to the five flags.
