How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular, white field —the cloth of the flag —crossed in the centre by two red stripes that reach all four edges and form a cross. Over the crossing goes the coat of arms of the province.

Cross
two red stripes —bands of colour —that cross at the middle of the field.
Coat of arms
centred, just above the point where the stripes cross.
Field
white; it carries no other ornament.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Huesca is white, with a large red St George’s cross crossing the whole field and the coat of arms of the province in the centre. It is the flag of the Provincial Council of Huesca, and it looks very much like that of the province of Zaragoza.

How it came about

No adoption date is known. It is a historical flag, which the Manual del Estado Español collects as a traditional symbol of the province. We have not found a decree establishing it, so the most prudent thing is to say that it has no documented official approval.

How it has changed

No earlier documented versions are known.

What it means

The flag combines a very ancient cross with a coat of arms that gathers the eight historical comarcas:

  • Red St George’s cross

the cross of St George, patron of Aragon. This cross also appears on the flag of the Provincial Council of Zaragoza.

  • Knight on horseback with a lance

in the centre of the coat of arms, a silver knight on a red ground represents the city of Huesca, with the motto “Urbs Victrix Osca”, “Osca, victorious city”.

  • Patriarchal cross

    symbol of Jaca.

  • Castle

    symbol of Fraga.

  • Crossbow

    symbol of Sariñena.

Fun facts

  1. Eight comarcas in a coat of arms

The coat of arms combines the arms of eight historical judicial districts, such as Jaca, Fraga and Sariñena.

  2. Almost the twin of the one of Zaragoza

The Provincial Council of Huesca uses a flag nearly identical to that of the province of Zaragoza: the same red cross on white, with the coat of arms of each province in the centre.

  3. A victorious city

The motto “Urbs Victrix Osca” appears next to the knight of the coat of arms and means “Osca, victorious city”. Osca is the old name of Huesca.
