Fun facts

  1. Three emblems, three origins

The fleur-de-lis comes from the French crown, the Occitan cross from the Provence region and the dolphin from the Dauphiné, the small state that ruled Nice. The flag brings together three different stories of the same territory.

  2. The dolphin looks towards the flagpole

The blue dolphin is turned towards the flagpole, the side the flag is hoisted from. The orientation is part of the blazon: a dolphin looking at the fly side would be a different flag.

  3. The cross with widening arms

The golden cross is not an ordinary cross: its arms widen outwards. It is the shape of the Occitan cross, which also appears on the proposed flag of Haute-Garonne. Two different departments carry it.
