Colours
red on the field; the other colours are inside the coat of arms.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Ávila is a red field with the provincial coat of arms in the centre. It is not a design that can be dated exactly: it is the flag of the Provincial Council of Ávila and is considered the traditional flag of the province.

How it came about

No adoption date is known. The flag simply places the coat of arms of the province on a red ground, and it is described as an ancient coat of arms. The official manuals of the Spanish administration list it as the traditional flag of the province, but we did not find a decree fixing its date.

How it has changed

No earlier versions are known.

What it means

The meaning lies in the coat of arms, divided into quarters. Each one represents a comarca, a judicial district of the province:

  • Castle

    Arenas de San Pedro.

  • Crow and trees

    Piedrahíta.

  • Knight on horseback

    Arévalo.

  • Zebra

    Cebreros.

  • Three-arched bridge with a boat

    El Barco de Ávila.

  • Central shield

the city of Ávila, with a cathedral and the figure of King Alfonso.

Fun facts

  1. A zebra in a European coat of arms

In the quarter of Cebreros there is a zebra, something very unusual in the coats of arms of European provinces.

  2. A coat of arms of comarcas

Each quarter of the coat of arms corresponds to a judicial district of the province, so the coat of arms is almost a small map of the province.
