The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Ciudad Real is a red field with the coat of arms of the Provincial Council in the centre. It is a flag with one curious detail: according to the FOTW website, it seems the Council does not use it, neither inside nor outside its building.

How it came about

The flag is the provincial coat of arms on a red ground, and no approval date is known. The coat of arms brings together the arms of ten capitals of judicial districts of the province, with many figures repeated, such as the Cross of Calatrava and several castles.

How it has changed

No earlier documented versions are known. In 1988, the heraldist Ramón José Maldonado y Cocat, the same one who designed the flag of Castilla-La Mancha, proposed a simpler design for the coat of arms, but the Council does not seem to have adopted it.

What it means

All the meaning is in the coat of arms, which is a mosaic of the cities of the province:

  • Cross of Calatrava

the Order of Calatrava, a very powerful military order in La Mancha, repeated in several quarters.

  • Castles

they appear in several quarters, alongside other local symbols.

  • Ten quarters

each one gathers the arms of the capital of a judicial district of the province.

Fun facts

  1. A coat of arms criticised by an expert

Maldonado y Cocat criticised the coat of arms for including only the capitals and not the whole districts, for repeating too many figures and for having a French shield shape instead of the traditional Spanish one.

  2. A flag nobody sees

According to the information gathered by FOTW, the flag does not seem to be used at the Council’s headquarters.

  3. Ten cities in a coat of arms

The coat of arms combines the arms of ten judicial district capitals.
