The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Córdoba is purple and bears the coat of arms of the Provincial Council. On the coat of arms a red lion on a white ground stands out, surrounded by a border with the symbols of Castile and of León. It is an official and very recent flag.

How it came about

The flag was approved at a plenum of the Council on 17 December 2008. The official resolution is of 4 February 2009 and was published in the official bulletin of the Junta de Andalucía on 16 February of that same year. The ratio is 2 by 3 and the coat of arms follows the modern Spanish style, with a rounded base.

How it has changed

No earlier documented versions are known. This is the first official flag of the province.

What it means

The meaning lies in the coat of arms:

  • Red lion on silver

it is the main element of the provincial coat of arms.

  • Border with castles and lions

the royal arms of Castile and of León, without crowns, which show Córdoba’s relationship with those old kingdoms.

  • Closed royal crown

it tops the coat of arms.
