The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Santarém has eight triangles, four white and four red, with the city arms in the centre. The arms show a castle over a wavy band representing the river Tagus. Santarém is the capital of the district of the same name, in the Ribatejo.

How it came about

In the 1930s Portugal regulated the symbols of its municipalities: each received a flag with its arms in the centre and a ground that indicates its category. Santarém, being a city, got the eight-triangle ground. The flag and the arms were published on 15 March 1935 in the Diário do Governo, the official gazette now called the Diário da República.

How it has changed

There are no earlier documented versions: the 1935 one is the first and has not changed. A variant exists with the mural crown in gold instead of silver, but the design is the same.

What it means

  • White and red gored ground

the eight triangles are the signal that Santarém is a city.

  • Silver castle

the castle of Santarém, with red doors and windows, on a blue field.

  • Portuguese shield

over the castle are the quinas, the blue shields of the flag of Portugal.

  • Wavy band

the river Tagus, which passes at the foot of the city.

  • Collar of the Tower and Sword

a Portuguese decoration surrounding the arms.

  • Mural crown of five towers

    the sign of a city.

Fun facts

  1. A saint gives the city its name

According to legend, Saint Iria (Irene), a Visigoth martyr from Tomar, had a body that remained intact and reached Santarém. The city took its name from the saint.

  2. It was once called Scalabis

The Romans founded it in the second century BC under the name Scalabis and it was the capital of one of the zones of Lusitania.

  3. Two versions of the crown

The flag has also been made with a golden crown, a variant recorded by Flags of the World.
