  • Lions

two, rampant, on green bases, on each side of the volcano.

  • Crest

a bird with spread wings, a hand and a flag with a name written on it.

Fun facts

  1. A name written inside the coat of arms

The hand of the crest holds a pennant with a name written on it. Few flags carry text inside the coat of arms itself; this one does, and the name is plainly readable at the top.

  2. Nine fleurs-de-lis on the frame

The blue border carries nine fleurs-de-lis, a high number for a frame. The border has almost as much visual presence as the coat of arms it surrounds.

  3. A smoking volcano

Instead of a castle or a cross, the centre of the coat of arms is an active volcano with smoke. It is a case where a landscape element, not a symbol of power, occupies the heart of the shield.
