The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Tochigi is light green, with a white drawing in the centre, and it is one of the few Japanese prefectures that bets on green.

How it came about

Tochigi approved its emblem on 1 December 1962 and the flag two years later, on 1 March 1964, with the same drawing, which has not changed. What the prefecture declares in writing is that it expresses progress and movement; the play with the Chinese characters is a very repeated reading, but not the official one.

How it has changed

The flag of Tochigi has not changed since 1964.

What it means

  • Light green

the ground, called pea green; a shade little used among the prefectures.

  • Kanji “tochi”

it is pronounced like the first syllable of the name and is at the same time the horse chestnut, the tree of the prefecture; that relation to the tree is a popular reading, not an official declaration.

  • Three arrows

they recall an ancient kanji meaning “wood”.

Fun facts

  1. The emblem is older than the flag

The emblem was approved on 1 December 1962; the flag came two years later with the same drawing, unchanged.

  2. An uncommon green

Among the 47 Japanese prefectural flags, Tochigi’s green stands out because almost no other uses it as a ground.

  3. A different measurement

Some sources give it a ratio of 7 to 10, slightly less elongated than the 2 to 3 usual in the other prefectures.
