The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Xèrica is one of the few that carry the symbols of the Crown of Aragon as the whole ground, not just as arms. On top of it, the arms of the town with two crowned rampant lions.

How it came about

Xèrica is a municipality of the Alto Vinalopó, in the province of Alicante. Its arms were approved by Resolution of 14 March 2005, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,983. The flag came two years later, by Resolution of 18 May 2007, of the conseller de Administració Pública, published in DOCV number 5,525.

The arms carry a silver castle between two crowned rampant lions, enclosed in ovals. The royal arms of Aragon occupy the ground of the arms.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was approved in 2007 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. Aragon in the ground, not in the arms

Most Valencian flags carry the bars of Aragon inside the arms. Xèrica puts them on the whole ground, with the arms of the town on top. It is a way of declaring belonging to the Crown outside and to the town itself inside.

  2. Two lions facing each other

Each oval carries a crowned rampant lion, and the two look at each other across the castle. It is the classic arrangement of noble coats of arms: the two guardians flank the central power.

  3. Crowned, which is the rare part

A crowned rampant lion is the princely version of the heraldic lion. Xèrica uses it twofold: two crowned lions on the same coat of arms. Few Valencian municipalities reach the crown in their arms.
