The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Yamaguchi is a dark wine brown with a white emblem in the centre. That emblem is a rebus: it combines the two kanjis of the name of the prefecture, yama (山, mountain) and kuchi (口, mouth), drawn as a bird flying towards the sun.

How it came about

The emblem and the flag were approved on 3 September 1962 by prefectural notification number 506, to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of the creation of the prefectural system. It was among the first: most Japanese provinces waited until 1968, like their neighbours Hiroshima and Tottori.

How it has changed

The flag has not changed since 1962.

What it means

  • Mountain and mouth turned into a bird

the two kanjis of the name, joined into a single figure that beats its wings.

  • Circle and sun

the bird flies towards the sun inside a round shape; for the prefecture it means the union and the leap forward of the inhabitants, and it evokes a land that has produced many relevant historical figures.

  • Brown shrimp ground

the prescribed colour is ebi-cha, a very dark wine; the emblem goes in white.

Fun facts

  1. A flag of its own to watch the sea

Yamaguchi, a peninsula with a very long coastline, regulates its fishing inspection vessels with a standard of its own: since 1980, a white field with two red stripes, the kanji for water and the emblem in gold.

  2. One of the most veteran symbols

On adopting its flag in 1962, Yamaguchi entered the small group of prefectures with a standard of their own; neighbours like Okayama and Shimane would still take years.
