How it is described

The flag in the words of vexillology and heraldry.

Vexillological description

It is a rectangular field (the field is the cloth of the flag) with a 2:3 ratio, divided into two equal vertical halves: yellow next to the flagpole, the pole it is hoisted on, and light green towards the fly side, the free edge.

Stripes
two vertical stripes —a stripe is a band of colour; vertical, from top to bottom—; each one takes up half the flag.
Two keys
crossed as a saltire —in the shape of an X—; each one measures five sixths of the height of the field.
Crossed colours
the segments of the keys change when they cross over: green on the yellow and yellow on the green.
No coat of arms
it carries no coat of arms, no border and no other figure.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Alfés is half yellow and half light green, with two crossed keys in the centre. What stands out is that the keys change colour depending on the half they cross, so none of them disappears at the crossing.

How it came about

Alfés is a village in Segrià, in Lleida. Its coat of arms, divided in yellow and green with two crossed keys, was approved in 1999. The flag came eleven years later: resolution of 4 March 2010, published in the Diari Oficial de Catalunya on 26 March.

The model is the usual one in Catalonia, the ‘square’ flag: rectangular, two high by three long, with the colours of the coat of arms enlarged and its figures in the centre.

How it has changed

It has not changed: it still follows the design approved in 2010.

What it means

  • Yellow and light green

the two colours of the coat of arms.

  • Two crossed keys

the attribute of Saint Peter, the patron of the town.

Fun facts

  1. The colours speak of water and sun

The record of the coat of arms explained its colours like this: Alfés is dry-farming country, but its fields turn green every winter with the waters of the Set river, and the yellow would be the sun and the harvests.

  2. They measure even the keys

The rule fixes that each key measures five sixths of the height of the field and says, piece by piece, which parts must be green and which yellow.
