Vexillological description

Gironnies
eight equal triangles, four white and four red, all coming out of the centre.
Coat of arms
that of Aveiro, centred: a white eagle on a green ground, with a sun and a moon.
Colours
only red and white on the field; the green stays inside the coat of arms.

The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Aveiro is a field with eight triangles that come out of the centre and alternate white and red, with the coat of arms of the city in the middle.

How it came about

Aveiro is a city in central Portugal. Its flag was published in 1960, on 9 August, following the 1930 municipal model.

The coat of arms of the city bears a white eagle on a green ground, with a sun and a moon. On the flag, the green stays inside the coat of arms: the field uses only red and white.

How it has changed

It has never changed. It was published in 1960 and there are no documented later modifications.

Fun facts

  1. A gyronny of eight points

The technical name of the drawing is “gyronny”: eight wedges that all come out of the centre and alternate two colours. It is a motif of heraldic origin, but here it works as a geometric ground for the coat of arms.

  2. The green does not leave the coat of arms

The coat of arms of Aveiro has a green ground, but the field uses only red and white. The green stays enclosed inside the shield. It is a decision that makes the flag have two colours and the coat of arms three.

  3. Sun and moon in the coat of arms

The coat of arms of the city bears a white eagle on a green ground, with a sun and a moon. It is a solar and lunar coat of arms, one of those in which the eagle looks towards both stars.
