The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Moixent is simple: blue and gold in two halves. The castle on the blue field is the whole history of the town in a single figure.

How it came about

Moixent is a municipality of the Costera, in the province of Valencia. The coat of arms has a long history: it was restored by Royal Decree 2845/1979, of 5 October, published in BOE number 277, and later modified by the Resolution of 2 February 1993, of the conseller d’Administració Pública.

The castle is not an ornament: it is the castle of the Luna, who were lords of the place. Moixent was one of the enclaves of the Luna lordship, one of the most powerful families of the kingdom of Valencia.

How it has changed

It has never changed since it had legalised cloth. The flag was approved by the Resolution of 31 May 2001, of the conseller de Justícia i Administracions Públiques, published in DOGV number 4,044.

Fun facts

  1. Twelve years between flag and coat of arms

The coat of arms was restored by Royal Decree in 1979 and modified by resolution in 1993; the flag was approved in 2001. Eight years passed between the definitive coat of arms and its cloth.

  2. The Luna dominated half of Valencia

The Luna was one of the most powerful families of medieval Valencia, with domains reaching from the Costera to the Maestrazgo. The castle on the flag of Moixent is not a neutral symbol: it is a statement of lineage.

  3. The castle is from the coat of arms, the flag is only the cloth

The coat of arms of Moixent is a complete heraldic piece with its own quarters. The flag only takes its clearest element —the castle— and repeats it on a blue stripe. It is a simplified version on purpose.
