The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Ponte da Barca has four quarters, white and red, and a coat of arms with a bridge, a red boat and two golden bees. It is partly a canting arms: ponte da barca means “bridge of the boat”. The town stands on the banks of the Lima river, in the district of Viana do Castelo.

How it came about

Flag and coat of arms were published on 12 March 1985 in the Diário da República. It is a very late date: similar towns got theirs in the thirties. The town, on the other hand, has had fueros since 1125.

How it has changed

The name comes from an old boat that crossed the Lima for the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela. The bridge was built in the mid fourteenth century.

  2. A flag from 1985

Flags of the World calls it “surprisingly late”: most of the town flags are from the thirties.
