The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Tokushima is indigo blue with a yellow bird in the centre. The bird is written with the two signs toku (とく) of the hiragana syllabary, the first syllables of the name of the prefecture.

How it came about

The emblem was chosen from designs sent in by the public and the prefecture approved it with notice number 166, of 18 March 1966. The flag, on the other hand, was never regulated in writing: Tokushima uses by custom an indigo blue field with the yellow emblem, sometimes with the name of the prefecture in white below.

How it has changed

The emblem has not changed since 1966, and the flag is the customary design that accompanies it.

What it means

  • Yellow bird

the toku signs stylised as a bird in flight. According to the prefecture, they symbolise harmony, union, take-off and development.

  • Indigo blue

it recalls the ai-zome, the natural indigo dye, the historic product for which Tokushima was famous for centuries. It is a customary choice, not a rule.

Fun facts

  1. A flag without a law

Like that of Kōchi, the flag of Tokushima is de facto: the prefecture regulated its emblem but never the field, and usage fixed the colours.

  2. Two flags at once

In actual use the clean version coexists with a variant that adds the full name in kanji at the bottom. Wikimedia Commons preserves both.
