The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Kagawa is olive green with a white symbol in the centre. It is the syllable ka (カ) of the katakana syllabary, turned so that it looks at once like a leaf and like a mountain range. One of the youngest prefectural flags in Japan, because Kagawa took a long time to have one.

How it came about

The current emblem and flag were approved together by prefectural notification number 295 of 1 October 1977. Until then, official events made do with the standard of the prefectural sports association.

How it has changed

The official flag has only existed since 1977, and has not changed since.

  1. Substitute flag of Kagawa: white field with an offset olive band and the name in white cut-out
    サンシャイン劇場 · Public domain

    until 1977

Until the prefecture regulated its flag, that of the Kagawa sports association was borrowed: white with an olive band towards the fly side and the prefectural name in cut-out.

  2. Current flag of Kagawa: olive green ground with the white symbol in the centre

    1977

Emblem and flag are approved by the same notification. The field is olive green with the white symbol taking up 3/5 of the height.

What it means

  • Ka turned into a leaf

according to the prefecture’s official interpretation, the lines of the syllable evoke both the mountains of the territory and the leaves of the olive tree, the prefecture’s tree and flower.

  • Olive tree

an ancient symbol of peace, representing the blessed land and the development of Kagawa.

  • Olive ground

the notification prescribes the olive colour, although the prefecture itself admits that the flags made usually come out a more normal green.

Fun facts

  1. An earlier emblem in three rings

From 1951 to 1977 Kagawa used a staff badge: the kanji kō (香) at an angle and the one for river (川) turned into three rings. It went on official cars and on the labels of agricultural products.

  2. The exact colour: an eternal problem

The rule fixes the ground with strict colour codes, Munsell 2.5GY 3.1/8.6, but in practice almost no cloth reproduces it and most Kagawa flags come out green.
