The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of the province of Palencia is a purple field with the arms of the province in the centre. The coat of arms is heavy with drawings, because each of its parts represents a different territory. It is the flag of the Provincial Council.

How it came about

I have not found the date on which the flag was fixed. What is documented is the coat of arms, which is what gives it its character. It was approved by a decree of the Minister of the Interior of 25 January 1949, and the Provincial Council accepted it on 5 February of the same year. The flag bears that coat of arms on a purple ground.

How it has changed

No earlier versions of the flag are known. The only thing that exists is a square variant, the only official alternative, used on official cars.

What it means

  • Purple

the ground of the flag, in a specific tone, Pantone 2613. I have not found an official explanation of the colour.

  • Coat of arms of seven parts

six represent the old judicial districts of the province and one, in the centre, the capital, Palencia. Among the drawings there are eagles, stags, stars and towers.

  • Motto “Armas y Ciencia”

it appears on the coat of arms, on both sides.

Fun facts

  1. A square flag for the cars

Besides the normal flag, with a 2:3 ratio, there is a square version, the only official variant, intended for official cars. In it the coat of arms takes up almost the full height.

  2. A coat of arms that is a division of territories

The provincial coat of arms is a sort of map: six of its seven pieces are the old judicial districts, and the seventh is the capital.
