The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

The flag of Vila Nova de Famalicão has eight green and yellow gores (triangles), with arms showing three pomegranates among bunches of grapes. It is the flag of a city that was born and changed its symbols on the same day.

How it came about

Famalicão was a town for centuries. A law of 14 August 1985 raised it to a city, and Flags of the World gives that same date for the current flag and arms. With the promotion, the ground became eight gores and the crown five towers, as in Fafe and Esposende.

How it has changed

The earlier versions of the flag and the arms were approved on 21 November 1935. Flags of the World does not describe them, and we have found no image.
