The full story

How it was born, how it has changed and what it means.

This flag is not that of Thailand as a country, but the personal flag of its king, Maha Vajiralongkorn. It is yellow and carries in the centre his royal cipher: his initials in Thai letters, the number 10 and a pointed crown.

How it came about

In Thailand every member of the royal family has a flag of their own, with their cipher and interlaced initials, on the colour of the day of the week on which they were born. Vajiralongkorn came to the throne in 2016, after the death of his father, King Bhumibol, and has used this flag since.

How it has changed

Each king has his own personal flag, so this one was born with the reign of Vajiralongkorn and has not changed since 2016.

What it means

  • Yellow

the colour of the king’s birthday, which in Thai tradition corresponds to Monday.

  • Letters ว ป ร

the initials of his regnal name, Maha Vajiralongkorn Paramarajadhiraja.

  • Number 10

he is the tenth king of the Chakri dynasty, which is why he is also called Rama X.

  • Great Crown of Victory

the crown of the kings of Thailand.

Fun facts

  1. One colour for each day

In Thailand each day of the week has a colour, and the flags of the royal family use the colour of the day on which each was born.

  2. The king has two flags

Besides this one, there is the king’s standard, also yellow but square, with a red garuda, a mythological bird. It has been used since 1911 and usually goes in front of the car the monarch travels in.

  3. Thai numerals

The 10 in the cipher is written with Thai numerals, which are different from ours: ๑๐.
